Walgreens

Go here for Walgreen's Official Coupon Policy.  You might want to print it out and bring it with you when  you go shopping.

Walgreens runs a program called Register Rewards (RR's) that are powered by the Catalina Company.  The RR's are coupons that print at the register after you buy certain products.  Each week they have RR deals that are promoted in their ad.  They also have monthly RR deals.  You can also find them noted on shelf tags throughout the store.  The RR's give you a certain dollar amount off your next purchase at Walgreens.  They are usually manufacturer's coupons and expire within two weeks.

Some people use their RR's right after they earn them due to the short expiration date.  Some use them the following week.  Most do the "rolling" method to maximize their savings.  If you don't have a Walgreens nearby, then redeeming them during the same shopping trip might work best for you.

Here is a summary on using RR's:
1.) Manufacturer's coupons can be used on products that have a RR promo attached to it.

2.) Only one RR will print for a product promo per transaction.  So if you want two or more of something that generates an RR, you will need to do separate transactions.

3.) A RR can be used to pay for an item that has a RR promo attached to it.  However, you will not get another RR if the RR used was earned from the same product or company bought in another transaction.

Example:  Body Wash ABC has a $3 RR deal and is on sale for $4.  Shampoo ABC also has a $3 RR deal and is on sale for $3.  Both are made by the same company.  If you use the RR from the body wash to pay for the shampoo, you will not get an RR from buying the shampoo.

Now on the other hand, there is also a deal on Shampoo 123 that is made by another company.  It is on sale for $4 and also has a $3 RR deal.   If you use the RR from the body wash to pay for this shampoo, you will get an RR from buying Shampoo 123.  You could then buy Shampoo ABC and use the RR from Shampoo 123.  Plus you would get a RR from Shampoo ABC!  This is what is considered "rolling" and is a good way to build up your stockpile.

4.) If using a manuf. cpn and a RR to pay, you will need a "filler" item for the RR.  This is because the RR is considered a manuf. cpn and needs something to "attach to" for the register to accept it.
  • A filler item can be something relatively cheap, something you can use, or something else on your list that doesn't have a manuf. coupon for it.  I like to get whatever canned good is on sale.  Sometimes they have holiday novelty items that work as well.
Using the example from above, you want to get Body Wash ABC that is on sale for $4.  You have a $1 manuf. cpn and a $3 RR.  To use both, you will need to get another item to be able to use the $3 RR.
  • Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes using the RR/manuf. cpn combo will result in overage.  Overage occurs when the value of the RR and manuf. cpn is more than the item you are buying.  So your filler item(s) will need to cover the overage or you will have mayhem at the register.
Another example, you want to get Shampoo 123 that is on sale for $4.  You have a $3 manuf. cpn and a   $3 RR.  To use both, you will need to get one or more filler items that total $2 or more to be able to use the both coupons (the $3 manuf. cpn and $3 RR).

5.) At this time, Walgreens store coupons can be used along with manuf. cpns.  I suggest having the cashier scan these last.

How I would do the above deals to start out with no RR's or very little OOP (out of pocket expense).  I did not figure in tax to keep it simple. This is also how I will post my scenarios for the blog.  Red coupons are manuf. cpns (insert, printables, etc.).  Green coupons are store coupons (in-ads, monthly booklets, etc.). Blue coupons are RR's.

Here is a rolling example that might clear up any questions on using RR's. I made up the products, companies, RR deals, and manuf. cpns used.

Body Wash ABC (made by Company A) is on sale for $4.  When you buy one, you earn a $3 Register Reward (RR).  There is also a  $1.00/1 manuf. cpn that is good on  Body Wash ABC.

Shampoo ABC (also made by Company A) is on sale for $3.00.  When you buy one, you earn a $3 RR. There are no manuf. cpns out for this product.

Shampoo 123 (made by Company B) is on sale for $4.  When you buy one, you earn a $3 RR.  There is also a $3.00/1 manuf. cpn out for this product.

Order #1:
Buy
1 Shampoo 123 @ $4.00 (made by Company B)
Use
- $3/1 Shampoo 123 manuf. cpn
Pay $1.00
Earn $3 RR Shampoo 123 (from Company B)

Coupon Math for the order: $4 Shampoo 123(- $3/1 manuf. cpn) = $1.00 sub-total
***Note:  No fillers needed as I didn't use a RR to pay.***

Order #2:
Buy
1 Body Wash ABC  @ $4 (made by Company A)
1 filler item @ 50¢ (could be cheaper)
Use
- $3 RR Shampoo 123 (from Company B, earned from Order #1)
- $1.00/1 Body Wash ABC manuf. cpn
Pay  $0.50
Earn $3 RR Body Wash ABC (from Company A)

Coupon Math for the order: $4 Body Wash ABC (- $1/1 manuf. cpn) + $0.50 filler (- $3 RR) = $0.50 sub-total
**Note:  Filler item was needed to have the RR attach to it.***

Order #3:
Buy
1 Shampoo 123 @ $4.00 (made by Company B)
1 filler item @ $2 (see note below)
Use
- $3/1 Shampoo 123 manuf. cpn
- $3 RR Body Wash ABC (from Company A, earned from Order #2)
Pay $0.00
Earn $3 RR Shampoo 123 (from Company B)

Coupon Math for the order: $4 (- $3/1 manuf. cpn) + $2.00 filler (- $3 RR) = $0.00 sub-total.
***Note:  Filler item was needed to have the RR attach to it.  You could get different filler items.  They just need to total at least $2 to cover overage. This is one way to get stockpile items for free or cheap!***

Order #4:
Buy
1 Shampoo ABC  @ $3
Use
- $3 RR Shampoo 123 (from Company B, earned from Order #3)
Pay  $0.00
Earn $3 RR Shampoo ABC (from Company A)

Coupon Math for the order: $3 Shampoo ABC (- $3 RR) = $0.00 sub-total
***Note:  No fillers needed as I didn't use a RR to pay.***

Final Tallies and Notes:
If I didn't do Order #3 above and used the $3 RR earned from Body Wash ABC (Order #2) to pay for Shampoo ABC, I would not get another RR as the two products are made by the same company. This is why I bought Shampoo 123 in Order #3.***

Doing these four orders, I would have bought $17.50 worth of products but only paid $1.50!!!  Plus I'd have a $3 RR to use later!
